The only place I've found that sells the starter motor block off kits is Mike's XS, and they're out of stock. I took the end off the defunct starter motor and put it back in place. I used some gasket maker sealant to install a plug over the opening. The sealant claims to be good for things like oil pans, which is sort of what this is, so it might work. Anyone got a better idea?

I think it will be a problem down the line. Take the starter cap to a welding shop and have them TIG the hole shut.

Actually I think you should leave it.

That metal often is not of sufficient quality to TIG a larger area....

just my 2p's worth.

I really don't know anything about welding, other than a little oxy/acetylene welding I did years ago. I thought about taking it to a welding shop, but it seems like all I'm trying to do is install an oil drain plug where there wasn't one before. The bike has two other oil drain plugs and they aren't welded in place. It would be better if I tapped threads into the opening and screwed in the plug, but this sealant seems to be holding it pretty tightly.

If you want the plug to hold, you might use a large washer and a machine screw over a piece of sealed gasket material on the outside of the plate and a drilled and threaded aluminum plug on the inside. Quite a few bikes use push-in fork tube caps. Find one that's a decent fit to the hole, drill and thread it, and run the machine screw into it with red Loktite. You don't have to use a heavy screw; either 1/4" or 6 mm. will do ya.

Geezer, no you're not crazy, it will work, I have done the same thing. The Scottsman in me refuses to pay for something I can make myself. But I did use a bolt/nut with a flat washer built onto them, if you know what I mean. Use a couple of fiber washers between the starter plate and the flat washers and some loctite on the nut to stop it coming loose. John.

I hear that! See, my real name is Bruce, as in "Robert the Bruce", a Scotsman through and through. Whenever I need something, I always try to make it out of stuff I already have. Only when that isn't possible will I go out and spend money. Some people think I'm rather clever.

All excelent suggestions, guys. It seems I'm on the right track with this one. As they say, If it ain't broke, modify it!

Press out the bushing before you thread in a bolt. That bushing can slide out.

I used a pipe plug and JB weld.
