I am doing a top end job on my 79,and I would like to bead blast and paint the head and rocker cover. Is there anything special I need to know before pulling the rockers out? Do the shafts just slide out after removing the shaft plugs or are they pinned somewhere else too? Just dont want to screw anything up,ya know?

They're not pinned but are a very snug fit. The end of the shaft is drilled and threaded so I screwed in an old bolt, found an open end that fit the bolt shaft and would catch under the head, then tapped them out. Put them all in separate labeled containers so they get installed back in their original locations.

I made a slide hammer with a pieced of threaded rod and a small clubb hammer that has a whole through it.

I screwed the rod in and tapped them out like that.

You may need to tap them back in as well..they are very snug and there is now wear on the tight engineering services that come into contact between the head cover and dowels.

when you install them make sure you put them in with the bolt holes out. if not you will have a hard time getting them out the next time.

Worse than that.....the oil flows through those rocker shaft notches on it's way to the inside of the rocker shaft to lube the shaft and make it's way via a hole in the center of the rocker shaft to the rocker arm oil port to lube the finger and the cam lobe.....and other things up there......putting them in backwards if possible would not be good....

Distracted, tired, and not smart enough to put down the tools....I just installed 3, (count'em boys) Yes 3, rocker shafts backwards in my rocker cover. Oh, the profanity. I made up new words, after I ran out of old ones. Mistakes like these give people strokes, I am sure of it. Oh, did I mention I have about 20 hours worth of porting into this head? It's perfect. Now this.... So, I need to get backwards rocker shafts out. Might try epoxy on a bolt head....But I really need other ideas. Too many holes to hydraulic out with a grease gun... Oh, this shrivels me testes. I am all ears, folks. Thanks in advance! Kyle

3 out of 4 ain't bad........only really square one after you have run it down the road for a hundred miles........should have been here when I put everything together on my top end and left out 3 out of 4 of the alignment dowels.......my kid came in after I was bragging about being done and asked "what are these dad"........... Embarassed
