Hey everyone. So this winter I'll finally have the time to do some real wrenching. First order of business, the carbs. I want to clean and rebuild them with new k&n pod filters on them as i'm also going to remove the airbox. Since I've never done anything like this before, can anyone offer some good reading that will walk me through the process? I have a clymer manual, but it makes a lot of assumptions about what I already know, and I feel is incomplete for a complete newbie to mechanics. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Also, I know that since I'm pulling the airbox, it will put a lot of stress on the carbs when I remount them. I've heard rumors about a reinforcing boot that 650central sells to fix this problem, but I cant find it. Is this true, and if not, what can I do to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!
Oh, its stock '75
Thanks again,
Duncan

By adding pods, you are going to have to rejet the carbs, that is first. Most motorcycle carbs are pretty simple. I would start by pulling the tops off, and remove the diaphrams and needles. Remember where everything goes, take pictures if you have a good digital, it will help upon reassembly. Then move to the bottoms, and remove the bowls, then the floats, then the main jets and the pilots. remove the chokes, clean really well, and reassemble with proper jets. Make sure your carb boots aren't cracked up, and they should hold fairly well.

Mike Morse's extra strong carb boots are expensive but well worth the $. Here is what it is listed as:

Heavy Duty 34mm Mikuni Manifolds

For those of you unfortunate enough to have purchased your 34mm carb kits from others, 650 Central offers the Heavy Duty 34mm Mikuni manifolds, properly modified for the XS650.These are designed to be used without the support of an airbox. Stainless Steel mounting hardware included. Sold by the pair. Heavy Duty 36-38mm versions now available.

30-34mm #CEN13-555MM2..... $57.90/pr. Quantity:

36-38mm #CEN13-556MM2 ..... $70.00/pr. Quantity:

Listed under the "Carburetion & Fuel System" link.

There's a pretty good guide on-line here .....

xs650temp.proboards29....rd=carbfaq

If you're going to use the stock holders, be sure to retain the metal shrouds - they add needed support. I've been running my 38s with the stock holders and pods for 3 seasons now with no problems so far. The heavy duty holders from 650Central are actually for the VM slide carbs. I'd ask if they'll work with your stockers before you buy them.
