My 1973 TX650 has been running K&N pod air filters since I got it as a basketcase 17 years ago. I've never been happy with the carburation, despite much tweaking, so this winter's project will involve going back to stock airboxes and filters. I've found myself in possession of a pair of stock boxes for a 1970 XS1 and they look nearly identical to the later version (see attachment). Here's my question:
Is there a reason I can't use these boxes on my 73 TX? I know the boxes are different part #s and the filters don't interchange from one box to the other. But the frames are the same, right, so they should mount fine. And both years run the same carbs and adjustments (although I found a reference at 650 Central to the 73TX using a 120 main jet. I used to run the standard 130 and recently got better results with 140 and the pods) One difference is that the 1971 XS1B (which uses the same box as the XS1) has a balance pipe between the intake ports on the head, so I don't know if that'll affect the equation.
So is it worth a shot, as long as I'm sure to buy the filters that fit the boxes?
Or am I missing something?
(By the way, I have the proper left airbox for the TX, so if anyone out there has a spare right side box, this whole post could be moot. I'd even be happy to swap the pair of earlier boxes for the one 1972-73 version.)

The differences between the early and late boxes are subtle at best. |

Sorry for the delayed response. You can not run XS1 Airboxes because they won't actually bolt up unless you want to modify them. The XS1 uses a smaller battery and subsequent battery box (where the airbox attaches). You could do it, but you would need the XS1 Battery and Battery box; which just isn't enough for your electric start. Sorry

I only actually got around to comparing the boxes side-by-side yesterday myself, and discovered what you said. No biggie, though. My brother went through some parts in my mom's garage and discovered the original TX airboxes there! So I'll be set! In fact I've since come by an XS1B parts bike, so I'll have a use for the XS1 airboxes after all. Thanks for the reply, though.
