I'm about to send a crankshaft out to Crankworks to be rebuilt (new rods and bearings) and rephased to 277 degrees. I have read quite often that it is a good idea to weld the crankpins and Crankworks will do this if I want it.

The question is, are there any down sides to doing this?

None. It's a good idea any time the crank is pressed apart and rebuilt since the flywheel splines tend to wear a bit in the process and become a little more prone to separation, and if you're rephasing and plan to turn a bit more than stock redline it's a must.

What do they do with the splines? The guy at Crankworks was talking about the crankpins only I think.

I'm not planning on exceeding the redline but it does happen (not always glued to the tach, sometimes there are more important things to watch), sounds like welding is a good insurance policy after being apart.

Thanks for the input.
