I've been reading with great interest all of the posts on the problems with engine heat. I can definitely agree that it is an issue. I have had this bike since it was new (84,000 miles) and I know that under some conditions (hot, low humidity, riding double, etc) it can get too hot and will not recover until it is shut off for a while.
I got looking at my bike, a basically stock '78 Special and I noticed that the horn is right in front of the engine. I wonder if it would make any difference at all if it were moved up and out of the air stream.
Just a thought...

Ive never used a horn on a bike for any purpose other than saying hello. I usually take them off. It certainly could hurt the cooling to move it out of the way.

I turned the bracket around on mine and the horn sits higher and tilts down sightly helping dirrect the air to the cylinders.......about 3 inches higher......gotta have a horn to honk at my friends and enemies in this little town......

With these it's a combination of things........I am running custom richer needles with hotter plugs to keep them clean....top end cooler....spin on filter.....135mj .....horn up.......have managed to get 25 degrees off it in the summer.......about right now..........these can be furnaces....

Another thing I notice is the effect humidity has. When it is really high the bike runs noticably better and probably cooler, although I don't have a way of measuring it. A cylinder head temp or an oil temp gauge would be helpful here.
I wonder if water injection would work?

Lemme get this straight, dps-rider--you've gotten 84,000 miles out of an air-cooled twin and you think it's overheating and needs to be reengineered? You are just pullin' John's leg, right?

Not 84,000 miles to an engine...
What I am saying is that it (and other toys I have ridden with air cooled engines) runs better when it is cooler.

Does anyone know what temp these bikes ran at when they rolled off the showroom floor - brand new?

Don't have to bend it.....just flip it over ......the bracket is pointing down....make it point up........
