I have a '74 TX650A and according to my Clymer the friction plates are out of spec.
It calls for a thickness of .140" down to .122"
ine are all about .117" to .119"

But here's the thing. My clutch has 7 friction plates and 6 clutch plates.

The manual shows 6 and 5, respectively.

So, with that said, is there a different clutch setup with more plates of less thickness? About the same total thickness as the 6 and 5 plate setup?
And if there is, WHAT ARE THE THICKNESS SPECS?

y manual was printed and revised in '74 to accommodate the TX650A. Is it possible that there is a typo?

I really don't want to have to buy new plates if I don't have to...

Don't know. Engine hasn't ran in 9 years and I brought it home in boxes.

If it worked, I wouldn't bother.

I'm rebuilding this motor from the sump cover to the head cover, so I want to make sure I'm not skimping on anything... on a budget.

Thought the older ones had one more of each. The newer ones are one less each. Don't know if you have a problem till you get them back together. Are the grooves worn out of the friction? That is one way to tell. At minimum, I would install new springs though.

Kablazze,

I am running into the same problem. I have the same bike 74 tx650a. The specs say the friction plates should be at 3.5mm new. If they are 3.1 or less replace them. Well mine were right on the border, about 3.15, so I got a new set from mikesxs. Once I pulled them out they were actually around 3.0mm, even less than my stockers. I rode it before I tore it down and it seemed to work ok but I was just gonna replace them. I'll keep ya posted. I think i'm gonna put the stock ones back on with my new springs.
