How hot is it outside when it runs hot? Are you lean on your carbs? It is an air cooled motor only like a VW used to be. They tend to run hotter than an oil cooled, or a water/oil cooled bike will.

1. What symptoms lead you to believe the engine is overheating?

2. You posted this under "Fuel," so you're already assuming carburetion. Check ignition and valve clearance first. If you do have a carburetion issue, there are several threads already up on cleaning and jetting.

The 79s have points so first thought is timing is off. It is vitally important to set timing to the full advance position and have both points advance to the same mark. Overly retarded timing leads to heat and overly advanced timing leads to detonation. Use premium fuel to ward off a host of engine damaging problems before they happen.

The next problem that is quite common is carburator imbalance. If one carb/cylinder is pulling harder than the other it makes sense that cylinder will run much hotter.

I have been talking about this a bit myself.......It is a combination of factors........

The oil never gets out of the engine to cool it down...
Lean conditions on 80 and later bikes......Have to practice a bit of brinkmanship with fuel mixtures.......Running richer mixtures in the summer even if it means using hotter plugs than reccomended to keep them from fouling..........

Temperatures over 90 degrees these bikes will still get hot if you are not careful.........
