Well nows the chance for a newby to find out some answers Confused ! Have an 81 Special that works well until the clutch is quite hot. The clutch seems to drop the last little bit when letting it out. A real problem at low speeds in heavy traffic as I can just feel the chain stretching and the rear sprocket getting mashed. It doesn't seem to be a problem when giving it heaps of juice in a fast take off. The clutch is probably let out faster with this. No problem when the clutch is cold . Is this just clutch adjustment? I have had it open and checked meat on the plates with a micrometer. They are still inside spec. Any thoughts? Cheers

Low speeds in heavy traffic in the summer the thing is probably way to hot.........Find a infra red thermometer and see what the temps really are....Might find something like 275 degrees......Frying pan syndrome.....

A little clutch noise on these when they are hot may be common....Mine does it a bit sometimes in heavy traffic starting off........Never when it's cold.....

Great feedback guys any thoughts on a solution?
The temp seems to get hot enough to create the problem after 5km riding in the middle of winter (Sydney) so I don't think it's just a heat problem. I'd call that pretty normal riding conditions. Kinda glad to hear I'm not alone with the trouble. I checked the chain Joseph and it seems to happen even when that has been tightened.
Kinda suggests that the plates are separating in a hurry once the pressure is released rather than gradually lettingg off the slack.
Cheers
