Is there any advantages to switching to a hotter plug? My bike is stock exept for free flowing megaphone mufflers. I just bought new coils, wires, and caps so is it good idea or should I just run what I have now? 1974 TX650A

If you're having trouble with fouling, consider a hotter plug or the same heat range you're running with a projected nose plug. The the tip of the projected nose plug (BP-series) is designed to extend further into the combustion chamber, leading to improved combustion efficiency and a quick rise to cleaning temp., and it's also exposed more directly to the intake stream for better cooling; the bottom-line effect is to extend the heat range of the plug. Your TX650A has the 447 engine, for which the BP7ES is the recommended plug.

I run B8ES's in my 74TX but I do mostly highway miles don't seem to to have any fouling problem, the plug color is your best guide, run the coldest plug you can get away with, less overheating, pre-ignition problems

My Original Yamaha manual recommends a BP7ES....I suspect the engine designers expected to run rich mixtures to help cool these air cooled engines....

Well my plugs now are a beautiful shade of brown so I know that the mixture is right. How an you tell when your engine is pinging/detonating? i know that my motor runs pretty hot as it is so a hotter plug may be a negetive so maybe I should try a bp8es?

Did you read about a top end cooler... did you miss it....If you try to cool it with fuel which won't work anyway in the summer you can wash the cylinders and get poor gas mileage and still have a blistering hot head and cylinders......Wa...la....Cool the FN thing down.........

well i know it is definitly not running rich because 45-55 mpgs is my average mileage. The bike already has a cooler installed on it by the previous owner. I will try and get a picture to show how it is rigged up.

Complete system coolers to me on these XS's are useless or maybe marginal for hot weather.....The hot places get the same temp oil as places that don't really need cooling thus heating up the oil needlessly.......For example my lower cases never gets hotter than 170 degrees so the cool 120-140 oil from the top end cooler goes straight to the hottest place the head and cylinders...And actually cools the lower end as it runs down .....Many will argue this but they just don't get it........The earth is flat syndrome...........Take your pick...275 or 300 degree top end or 230-240 degree top end on a hard running summer day...no brainer......

The xs1100 complete oil cooling system is even worse...There is a super tiny pinhole restrictor to the top end so the lower end stays cool while the top end fries.......At least we can send a bunch of oil to our top ends because the lower oil pressure and higher flow alows more oil to the top end through a much larger restrictor........Lucky...Lucky......

well I made the switch to the BP7ES. So far after 170 miles of raural backroads and interstate, the bike seems to be running excellent. 55 mpgs seems great.

Autolite 63 cross references and seems to be the same plug as BP7ES ngk....Auto zone $1.43...Think grizld1 is right the extended tip seems to run better while the engine is warming up which to me means the tip cleans off faster and it also seems to axcelerate better after warming up......I'm sold so far........

Just so everyone is clear - a BP8 is Colder than a 7 - 6 is hotter.
NGK numbers go backwards.
