I have a 79 xs 650 ,anyone ever encounter this problem?.I also have noticed it has been running lean.any help would be appreciated.thanks

Cross over your spark plug wires. If it pops on the other side its electric if it continues on the same side its fuel related. Check carbs and work your way to the valves. Also check to see if the muffler is obstructed in anyway.

thanks i will try that tomorrow.i am thinking it is the carbs because of it running to lean.

If the lean side is the side that's cutting out, I'd suspect an air leak at the boot or the throttle shaft or a loose/damaged air filter. A few shots of aerosol carb cleaner will often show you where an air leak has developed; when you hit the leak, your idle will drop.

well i checked my air filters and they were trashed.ordered some new ones,should be in tuesday..dam there not cheap are they..lol.well any way thanks for all the help..Al

While you're waiting for filters, check your contact breaker points.
