I have noticed there is a strange vibration coming from my bike. I notice it in my hands and feet after I get done riding. When I sit at a stoplight, in first gear, clutch in, I notice my mirrors vibrate... then not so much... then more... then not so much... and it keeps doing this, some kind of oscillation. Does anyone know what it could be?

XS650 is the reason........
1..Tune carbs well.
2..Balance carbs.
3..Check Timing..
4..Stiffen top motor mount.
5..Check that all motor mounts are tight..
6..Gear it higher so it won't rev to death...Biggest help.....
7..Adjust Cam Chain..
.........More complicated.....
1..Check runout on crankshaft....
OR...If runout is good then....the expensive one below....
2..Have crankshaft balanced.
If all this fails drink more beer.......

For any of you gear heads that want a lot less vibration and a bunch more smoothness.......adjust CR down just a bit .........spent a lot of my summer experimenting on that subject and found the right combination..........up .040 thou on the head and 2 degrees retard on the cam....(.020-.025 thou)....smooth as a baby's ass....bet it will last a "lot" longer too.........

your mirror shakes only sometimes?!
The whole front end of mine dances if my hands aren't on the bars. according to the original owner it rolled out of the dealership that way.
Sound interesting John, by retard the cam do you mean you reground it?
I gotta say I've never had a lady complain about the vibration

After 60K on mine I just wanted a real smooth bike.......tired of all that contraption vibes.........
When the head is raised .040 thou it rotates the chainwheel forward which advances the cam shaft about 2 degrees.....this causes an artificial leaness because the intake valve closes too soon and the cylnder won't fill completely...these are already advanced to the wall already...first scribe a mark on both chainwheel and cam that line up.....then press off the chain wheel on the cam with a piece of heavy muffler pipe and a press and reposition the cam 2 degrees retard makes it run like stock cam timing again.......made the mistake of not doing this and it won't run right unless this is done..........retarding the cam back to stock for the .040 raised head is easy.....on the notchside you rotate the cam clockwise .020-.025 thou and press it back on the chainwheel.....love the way it runs now.....up the express ramp in 4th (18/29) then 5th and gone....like an outboard now..........

Also..
Check your compression between the cylinders...probably OK..but its possible valve seat or bore / ring problems is making one pot over the other.

I have noticed that the thicker a persons skull is the less sensitive they are to vibrations .............heard it also can induce sterility and cause blurred vision and impotence......and the more the frame is hacked away the more these problems can become apparent ......me I'm not taking any chances..........

I remember after the first time I rode mine I got off and my feet felt tingly. Never get that now, may have been riding in tennis shoes that day me thinks. Get big stomping boots and you're all good. No vibration in my hands but I have foam grips maybe it helps?

Guess if it didn't vibrate people would start taking it apart thinking something was wrong............

My slides backwards on the center stand when it revs a little.

if major work is an option rephasing the crank almost eliminates the vibrationbut get pricy cam $350 ignition $400 and why stop there porting springs and retainers big bore and for the extreme long rods balancing carbs and custom 9.5-1 pistons and

My experience with the cranks ....the earlier 447 (pre 80) had different balancing holes......after dicking with the 80 crank I used a 78 which was way smoother....and my 77 was smoother also...pot luck or the earlier ones are better.....who knows... but lowering the CR just a tad really made the biggest difference.....if you can stand loosing a HP or 2......I know it's not the American way....MORE>>>>MORE Bull S#$T.....from 8.5 to 8 cr........Volkswagen used 7-1 mostly........

haha I can feel my xs1b wants to move a little if you rev it on the center stand but NOTHING like that! On the other hand when he gets off the front end isn't shaking, mine dances up and down some.

There is no movement in my front wheel at idol....the vibrations I was really discussing were like going down the road a 60+ mph.........vibes definately work against engine life..............wonder how far they would roll without them............

Agree with you John on the 78 crank. My bike has the usual small front wheel dance at idle, but once you starting rolling my engine smoothes out. Heard about guys having trouble with licence plate holders vibrating so bad they broke off................don't see any of that on my bike.
Rode a 80 XS650 that my friend has, and it seemed to have more vibration.

When we rolled them out in Florida it seemed that every one of them was different.........wasn't working there when the 80's came out though....and I would end up with one ....go figure.......but even the 78's can be improved I have found.....
Doesn't take much to check the runout.....especially if the crank is in your hand.... ...my 78 crank was .001.......over .002 would be a 5 speed dildo for sure....beginning to think some may like that though.......
