main fuse blowing!! HELP!!!!!!!!

I have a 1980 XS I took the generator brushes and holder apart to clean and inspect (wasn't making electricity) the rotor is gettin replaced and the brushes. But I need help with the wiring on the brush assy. After I cleaned the existing brushes, stator and rotor and put back together, I rode about 10 miles down the road and it blew the main fuse, put a new one in and turned the key on then the switch on the handlebar and poped the main fuse again. Had to be trailered home. Still pops the main fuse unless I pull the brushes and their wires.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

done exactly the same with my 83 special, that little bush guard that sits to the right of the bushes was touching the screw that holds the bush in place so shorting out,just needed to be bent back to original shape, end of my problem,hope this helps,Gerry

thanks guys the lug and insulation had viberated loose and grounded, thanks again, now more test riding to work the bugs out of my 20 year barn queen.
