I'm looking at using an autometer pro-cycle tachometer I have laying around. Anybody know how many pulses a 1980's ignition puts out per rev? I could probably look it up, but I'm feeling lazy.

AutoMeter finally responded to my questions. They say the 1/2 pulse tach I have should work if I hook it to one of the coil negatives. Does this make sense to anybody. They said that the cam runs two to one to the crank so the ignition signal to the coil should match. It makes sense to me, cause don't the coils fire every two revolutions of the crank? Because why would they fire every revolution on a four-stroke two-cylinder?

On an 80 with electronic ignition. Once per revolution. Both plugs fire. One is on exhaust on is on compression. Both rods are connected to the same side of the crank.

So it's an emissions thing? Burning off any excess fuel on the exhaust stroke?

I guess your saying the tachometer I have will only work with the older points ignition.

Sounds like the tack would work on 79 and earlier xs"s. With Points.
The one you have would most likely read 4000 rpm when your really turning 2000 on the 80 and above models with electronic ignition.

Yesterday I refilled my laserjet cartridge outside in the sunlight so I could see what I was doing and keep the mess out of the house. Put it back in and it only printed real black with smudges everywhere. Useless. Then I read don't let sunlight hit the blue cylinder because it will become permanently damaged. To the round file with the cartridge.

Anybody with a 79 and earlier XS want to buy a nice AutoMeter Pro-Cycle tachometer cheap?

This Tach is just like mine and it should work both ways. Mine is on a Boyer ignition system. I think you need to cut the small brown looped wire just barely sticking out of the wire protection sleeve. After you cut it just put some heat shrink on them and stick them back up into the sleeve. I like mine fine. If you still don't want it I will buy it from you if it is cheap!

here it is on my bike. I turned a custom mount and I think it looks great. I used my GPS to see what my speed was in top gear at different RPM so I really don't miss the speedo.

Mine does not have a brown wire. Like I said, it was precalibrated at the factory for 1/2 pulse. When I bought it I thought I was buying the one with the brown wire for calibration.

I would have sent it back to the guy I bought it from but he's a real jerk. I'm still getting nasty emails from him for not liking his inadequate ebay listing.

For what it is, and its condition, I would like $100 for it. Free shipping.

If it had the brown wire I would definitely use it. It's a beautiful gauge.

What is the model number? Have you checked this info?

www.autometer.com/down...n/369N.pdf

Based on the Autometer tech info I'd look real hard for that brown loop that Cafe_Shop mentions.

The PDF you linked to I have in paper form. It came with the gauge and it's worthless. I actually talked to autometer. The only looped wire is a dark blue one deep inside the case. I was told to definitely not cut that one. The tach has a factory sticker on the back saying it is calibrated to 1/2 pulse, heavy damp'ning. It's a factory option. The tech guy I talked to at autometer said it would work on an earlier XS. He said he was using one on his XS with the signal wire attached to one of the coils.

cafe shop you are right MOST engines 4 stroke do fire everyother stroke. But some such as the great american freedom machine fires every stroke. Hencing the terms singlefire ignition for the every other stroke, and dual fire for the every stroke. This being said I know of no way to convert your tach due to the single pick-up coil.
