I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. I have been riding for many years, but just got back into the sport when I reacquired the same 1980 650 that I had given away to a friend 5 years ago. It sat around unused and he gave it back to me last spring. Thanks to Ebay and Mikes, I was able to revive a 9,000 mile mostly original XS 650 with just a little effort.

I would like some advice from you pros. I would like to paint the frame. What do you recommend? And if I were to paint the tank and side panels, again, what would you do? Does anyone use spray cans, or do you recommend a more professional spray job?

Anyway, good to be around fellow 650 fans.

Dave

welcome Dave! paint can be very expensive , its only worth having it done professionaly if its a gem, in some cases it will cost more than the bike is worth, but if you have a setup to do it yourself then the cost won't be to bad. Rattlecan jobs don't come out good usually in enamel , but I did mine with a rattlecan , I used high gloss black laquer rust-o-leum found in walmart, waited 2 days to dry good and then sanded it with 1,000 grit nice and smooth , then buffed it lightly with polishing compound, then used NU polish , looks real nice right now but it won't last all that long unless I take it and have it clear coated., you can't clear coat from a rattlecan , looks terrible.

Thanks, xsfun. That's sort of what I had in mind. Not to create a show bike, just something that will look decent. Did you prime the tank and covers, or did you just spray right on top of the original paint?

hey Dave, yes I primed because I sanded down to metal in some spots where there was few dings in the tank and filler used. There is some pics here in the bobber section of it , or larger clearer pics at this link

Thanks for sharing those pictures. Nice bike, well done. I just love those pipes. The paint looks super. I hope to make a cosmetic resto something of a winter project, though I don't really want to keep the bike off the road that long.
