Miracle of miracles. I just picked up a still-in-the-factory-box, brand-spanken-new, XS750 tank for my cafe. I'm looking for a painter in Michigan who can paint the tank, tail section, and my helmet with a really heavy silver metal flake. The automotive shops are hesitant in painting a helmet. There has to be a bike painter out there who has no problem painting it that also has experience with metal flake. I really want that old Ducati bass boat paint job.

careful about painting your helmet, most will have a warning tag in them that tells you not to paint or sand the helmet. I know that many people ignore this, and in fact I have ignored it in the past by having a helmet painted. However, after I had it painted there was always a lingering doubt in my mind about whether it would hold up like it should in a wreck. In the end I decided that the folks who designed the helmet (and included the warning) probably know more about it than Chuck the airbrusher, who insisted that it would be OK, and I got a new one. I'm not saying don't paint your helmet, I'm only saying that if your as obsessive about safety as I am, you might think twice.

The manufacturer of the helmet I'm buying encourages custom painting. I've been told they'll even ship the helmet directly to the painter unassembled. I also have pretty in-depth knowledge of how helmets are constructed. The only real issue is the paint thinner/fumes deteriorating the foam. If the helmet shell is painted before assembly, it's not a problem.

For a injection molded polycarb helmet do not paint, there is a phenomena called solvent cracking. A laid up Kevlar, glass, resin shell can be painted. Just scuff up the gel coat and you are good to go.

I don't think I'd trust my skull to an injection molded part. Unless it was maybe an inch thick. The stuff is just too brittle.
