I recently purchased a 1977 xs 650 and I took the clutch apart to replace the plates and springs and noticed that there were only
5 steel plates
6 friction plates
I was looking around and have read from a few places that there should be
6 steel plates
7 friction plates
Was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem.

Maybe someone replaced it with an 80+ clutch thinking they were better which they aren't....if so it should have a thicker steel plate held on the clutch boss with a wire.............

doesnt have the clutch boss held on with the wire. Iam thinking mabey someone rebuilt it and forgot 1 steel plate and 1 fiber plate? Is there anyway I can tell the year of my engine?

Yes, your engine # will tell you what year it is, check against these charts:
