Will XS1100 mastercylinder, discs and calipers be a direct bolt on?
My bike is a 1977 XS650.
And what are the brake performance like?
Is it worth upgrading?

The whole thing is a direct bolt-on to your '77. The brake lines will be too long. I expect braking performance will have to improve, so long as everything is working properly. The down side is the big increase in unsprung weight.

The XS1100 must be a standard and NOT a Special. Special calipers are a no go on your bike.

Is your bike a single or twin disc setup? The Specials had a single larger diameter (297mm from memory) disc while the European roadsters had twin discs of smaller diameter (about 270 mm I think). The caliper mounting lugs are different heights for the different diameter discs. I converted my special to twin disc using an extra disc off an XS1100, and I think the extra braking performance warrants the extra weight. If you are converting the smaller diameter twin disc setup to larger discs I suspect the increase in performance would not be as noticeable (my twin disc Euro project is not yet roadworthy so I can't comment!). Several models have interchangeable components; my conversion included a LH mounting bracket off a SR500 and a caliper of a TR1. My master cylinder was from an unknown more modern Yamaha, and I drilled the discs and used braided hoses. Ther's a chart on one of the forums (650 Central?) giving 'ideal' master cylinder/piston area bore sizes; I must admit I haven't checked my setup against the chart but it works fine.

I keep forgetting there's links to pics and all sorts on this site Just looked at your 77 pics which looks to be twin smaller disc setup, so I assume you want to go with the larger disc setup from the 1100. I think Marty's right in that all the components are the same but I think you won't be able to use the larger discs with your existing fork lowers, as the calipers will be mounted too low for the discs. Could always use a set off a special.

It a twin disc setup. I would like to obtain orginal look, whit better brake performance. I am used to ride modern sportsbikes, and my track day bike.
So the first time on the XS was a bit of a shock...

I know what you mean, I ride a modern(ish) Yam 600 with 'one finger' braking as well as the XS. The XS is however very good compared to my old Triumph 5TA 7 inch SLS brake. I'm glad there's been some progress through the years!
Pads can make quite a difference - I assume you are using sintered?
Your track day bike looks interesting - what brake setup have you got on that one?

My track bike is a modified Ducati (desmodue) with Brembo radial brakes.

Oh right, I assumed the white racer in your photo gallery was the track bike. If you're used to radial brakes the XS is a bit lacking!

I think the rotors for a single setup is the same rotor as a dual setup. I put the xs1100 rotors on my 75 front wheel. Put a 79 set of forks on to hold the wheel and use the later style single piston calipers. The xs1100 rotors are the same diameter as the 650 rotor, the offset is different. 2/10 of an inch.
I'm using a 16 mm M/C from an 82 Seca 650. It works very well with the dual disc set up. A gentle two finger pull and you haul it down to a stop in very short order. A 14 mm M/C would work even better. A bit more lever travel and more power.

Do you use the 16mm M/C with standard XS650 calipers and discs?
Does anyone know if theres a older Yamaha model with 14mm M/C?
(just to obtain close to standard look)

Some TZ 350's had a 9/16ths (close enough to 14mm) m/c
This page is a bonus when matching m/c's to callipers
www.vintagebrake.com/m...linder.htm
I thought XS1 callipers were the same as 650 units???????
Anyway, you need to know your calliper diameter & number of them.
Standard 650 late model callipers are 40mm single piston
Early 650's were 48mm twin piston (I run 2 of these).
Give MMM a call/email if your in any doubt on what you should do, he'll set you straight! Cheers

Hmm still can't edit!
Looking at the vintage brake site & assuming you've got 2 single piston 40mm callipers....Ideal m/c would be around 5/8th - 16mm. Good luck!

Maybe I should add to the confusion. Have a look at this site:

Lots of nice setups there. But i like to retain the original look.
Is it just the adapter for the caliper he is producing?

fishheadbigbrakes
He mentions kits on the site. It looks like it's best to call him. The telephone number is easy to find on the site.

I am using two later style single piston calipers. Two xs1100 rotors, the slotted ones. The m/c is from an 82 Seca, 16 mm.
On the rear I am using the rotor from either an xs750 or 850. Slotted to match the fronts.
These brakes work great. I haven't ridden a lot of bikes, no new sport bikes. My first 650 had far better brakes than the Kawasaki I had. The 650 I now have had good brakes. The Harley had the best so far. Dual on front, single on rear. As I was redoing the 650 I decided to go with the dual up front and a single on the rear. The 650 now has the best brakes.
