Question Does anyone know at which engine serial number the transmission gears were upgraded? On Mike's site it states that the new 5th gear is for 1978 and on trannys. I have a very late model 77 that has original 78 carbs and am wondering if my tranny gears are the newer style. Also, if they are the older style, can Mike's 5th pinion gear be put in combination with a new main gear or does the entire cluster need to be changed?

You would hve to look at the gears if you are hoping for a later trans........the gears have 2 grooves across the outer face....... gear it 18/30 and have it pretty much nailed....higher gears run along better also if you retard the timing a bit............like 1/8 of an inch on the rotor or until the bike goes around corners at 2000 rpm without getting cranky......
