This fall/winter i am going to be doing a full rebuild on the motor for my '82. I'm looking at lots of new parts from mikesxs, but there are a few things i need to look for as i tear it down.
First off, there is a large amount of oil leaking from under the left side cover. I think that its coming from the shifter spindle. I can change the seal on the spindle, but i remember reading on here couple years ago that the leak might not just be the seal, and there was something in the shifter that might need to be replaced as well to stop the leak. If someone can tell me what I should look for, that would be great.
Mostly, giving the engine a thorough cleaning and rebuild will be a great experience, and i'm looking forward to it.

There are 3 things that can leak under the left cover. The clutch pushrod, the tranny output shaft and the shifter shaft. There's no secret to replacing the shifter shaft oil seal. You do have to remove the shifter shaft, and that involves removing the right engine cover and removing the clutch.
Refer to a workshop manual such as Haynes................good explanations and pictures too!
