Put the chain on the sprockets, push the wheel all the way forward, pull the chain as tight as you can, cut it at as short as you can. Install the master link, Pull the wheel back, good to go.

The best way is with a chain breaker!
Second best is a grinder, grind off the peened top of the pin you need to remove & tap it out!

Agreed... re cutting off the swelled ends first for sure.....I find that a cut-off disc on the Dremel does this job very nicely and neatly FWIW. Blue

When I installed the 31 on my '80 G, I bought a stock length chain with it(104 link). I believe I only took out 2 link's for a very tight fit. The chain is not the 'o' ring type, but with the wheel all the way forward, it was real tight getting it to fit. Oh, 17 on the front,BTW. And yes, cutting off the bucked end's off the roller's befor using the chain breaker work's the best & easiest.

Thanks guys the grinder worked grreat. Although I never have been able to lift the chain a half link off the back sprocket? I don't think the chain is too tight though because there is adequate free-play in it. Is this alright?

lifting the chain off the sprocket tells you if the chain is worn out, the chain should have 3/4'' slack in the center of the bottom run to tight and you wear out the chain/sprockets quicker, to loose you get chain slap and jerking in gear

I have a 17/32 sprockets with a stock 102 link chain. I have a too wide a tire on the rear so the extra links help keep the tire back to minimze the tire rubbing.
