The brakes on the '75 are a one or two year only item. In my parts search, I've come across some 1975 XS500 stuff. The master cylinder and caliper all look identical and have the same base part # in the Yamaha parts catalog.
Rebuild kits for the '75 M/C are expensive. The XS500 stuff is in working condition. Will it all swap over to the 650? Are the bores of the M/C the same? I figure I'll need new hoses, but the calipers and master cylinder from the XS500 would get me much farther along on this project and a much lower price if they'll interchange.

OK, I've found out they're the same and intechangeable.

Next question...The '75 uses a pressure switch on the brake line to light up the brake light. If I use the '78 wiring harness, won't the wiring that goes to the master cylinder switch be the same as what would go to the pressure switch on the '75?

yes, a little different routing but same wires, instead of up to handle bar lever switch just down to pressure switch out of the headlight, wire terminal ends may be different
