I have a new pair of Harley Sportster shocks, 13" long that I would like to mount on my '79 Special II. I think the bit of extra length as compared to the stock Yamaha units may improve the handling and the old units are leaking. The lower mount on the Sportster shocks are a bit too wide to fit into the brackets on the swingarm, so I thought that I would grind the lower shock mounts to fit into the swingarm bracket. I will push out and reuse the Yamaha rubber/metal bushings. Anyone done this? I am open to any advice or suggestions.

I run HD shocks on mine. I ground off the outside mounting bracket on the swingarm and tapped the hole 1/2" coarse thread. Bolted right on, been running them for a couple years about 15000 miles without a problem.
