Well, it seems that my 73 TX speedo is hosed. I lubed the cable and tested it from the feed end by spinning the inner cable, and the needle goes nuts, so the issue is in the speedo. Rats. Anyone who has an excellent condition speedo for a 73 is invited to let me know, please.
Thank you!

Well... some good news! Just for grins, I hooked up my lubed cable to my drill, reversed it, and the speedo works nicely up to about 30 mph, which is all the faster the drill will spin. so, I get to keep my correct gauges!
The problem comes when I hook the cable back up to the mechanical sending unit. I have not had the bike out yet, but if you just roll it across the shop a bit, the needle is whacky. I don't think it's the cable, so what goes on down there in that sending unit? Any ideas? I suppose I'm hoping it might be something that will correct itself when I take the bike out.
But I'm so happy that I don't have to look for a new speedo any more!

What was the outcome on this? Was it the driving part just needing lubed? Or was a repair needed?

Just now saw this. My speedo seems a little dodgy below 10mph, but beyond that it seems okay. I have another cable so I'll likely change that when I have a chance.
My bike happily does not seem to need any major work, but trying to button up all the little bits and bobs is a challenge. Guess that's what winter's for!

As mentioned above, the speedo gear box is close to indestructable. It just needs to be taken apart, cleaned and lubed with grease.
