I purchased a stock 73 fender for my 72 and it doesn't exactly bolt on.

the original 72 fender had been chopped to eliminate the fender stays, so I don't have them to go by.

Do you generally have to flex the fender inward to get the stays to line up with the holes? i.e. could my new fender be 'sprung' outward or are the 72 and 73's just a little different?

I can compensate by elongating the upper mounting holes and allowing the fender to hug the tire a little more but would rather not unless its the only way...

Im not 100% positive but I think that both 72&73 used the same forks which would mean that it should bolt right up with no alterations. Are you sure that the new fender is from a 73?
