starter problems

hey how you all doing this is my first post so let me introduce myself. my name is rich im from new york. i recently got hold of a 75 off e-bay. the main problem i have to deal with first is that the starter will not engage. when i hit the starter button i hear the solenoid clicking but no start also for a little while i was able to start with the kickstarter but now the kickstart dosent seem to grab at all. also when using starter button i hear a grinding noise. so im thinking the #4 bendix gear is worn but would the worn bendix also keep my kickstart from engaging? thanks in advance for any help. this is my first xs i've ridden honda sohc 750s all my riding life and im not to knowledgeable with the xs 650 yet regardless though i love this bike and absolutly need to get it on the road.

pull the clutch cover and inspect all your starting system components replace the obvious and bendix spring.
