the forks up to 76 were 34mm tubes, 77 on were 35 mm tubes. the calipers from the early forks wont bolt right on to the newer forks. you could build an adapter to mount the old calipers on to the new forks. the trees are pretty much the same, a few different mounting lugs for the brakeline connectors. the chrome yamaha trim piece can be left off or used. the 35 mm tubes are a bit stiffer than the 34 mm tubes. you can add a fork brace to help stiffen the 34mm forks. alot of people add a brace on the 35 mm forks too. some folks have used the front end off an xs1100, they have a 37 mm tube. i went with a set of 79 trees and forks on my 75 xs650b. getting the parts to put the dual disc on front are easier to find.

I run 34's, with a good fork brace they are fine. Sure if you were starting from scratch, you'd go the bigest you could, but if there's nothing wrong with what you've got, spend your $ on a brace, some new springs and a front end overhaul! While your at it, check your wheel bearings and if not done already, fit tapered roller steering bearings to your head stem. Probably do most of that cheaper than you'd get a 35mm set for, and even with the 35's you still need to do all the above!
