32 or 33 will give you a couple hundred rpm drop at speed, you won't notice much differece at all than what you have now as far as acelleration goes, mine with 17/31 runs 65mph @ 4200 about 500 rpm lower than stock, 4200 is right where the carb slides start to lift (better gas milage if you can stay out of the main circuit jets) the thing is these motors are plenty strong so they will pull the higher gearing just fine

Sprocket Specialists quoted me sixty something for a 33 or 34 XS500 sprocket, and another ten dollars for their hardening process. Is that a reasonable price?

I'm not quite sure what you meant by a blank sprocket, Jayel. I understand drilling the mounting holes, but I imagine some special machinery would be needed to cut the teeth. Or perhaps you meant with teeth, but with blank mounting area.

yes the center isn't machined, pretty easy to get it cut out if you know someone with a lathe, which I do, looked at TSC site about sprockets closest they were showing was a 30 (about $20 unhardened) so if you want to stay close to stock gearing, i would go with that 33, you will still need a offset spacer but you need to get some measurment from the wheel first

If I was 175 lbs I would run 18/30.........being 135-140 I run 18/29......and even in town (rural) I use 4th a lot so there is 3 gears below and one above......what a ride on the highway in 5th.......3500 at 65.......

I've found the threads where people are calculating rpm's at speed/gear combinations, and I've found calculators, but I can't seem to find the gear ratios in our tansmissions. Can someone point me in the right direction?

The problem with these transmissions is that they are close ratio......1-2-3 are high and 4-5 are not high enough.......4-5 are too close to 3 as compared to a wide ratio trans where 4 and 5 are higher......my 360 yamahas are wide ratio's......why they made the 650's thay way is maybe they figured riding double would kill high gears wihich it will....

1st 2.461:1 (32/13)
2nd 1.588:1 (27/17)
3rd 1.300:1 (26/20)
4th 1.095:1 (23/21)
5th 0.956:1 (22/23)
primary drive ratio 2.666:1 (72/27) (this is the clutch hub and crankshaft pinion gear)
final drive ratio 2.000:1 (34/17) (stock sprockets)

1st gear on the XS1 and XS1B are 2.214:1 (31/14)

Another correction; I believe 2 nd gear should be 27/17.
