Installed a spin on oil filter using the kit from 650Central, And my Iron Cross diamond plate logo cover.

I also made a smaller version for the left side cover. Poor mans billet.

How was the install of the kit? Now that you did it can it be done another way without the expense of the kit?

I think the kit is something like $90.00 - I am trying to do a VERY low buck build so I was wondering if there was a more economical way of doing the conversion which looks AWESOME!

Machine it yourself. You can find the drawings here:
home.gci.net/~dyen/XS650.html
I'm pretty sure this is the guy who developed the original. He has two styles. The pressure side version is the one everybody uses.

I didn't check with any local machinist's but I doubt I could have saved any bucks trying that route. I wouldn't consider this a neccessary item for a low buck build but sometimes we just want something on our bikes anyway. I haven't changed my oil yet to see results of the filter but I'm happy with it for the roughly $100 I spent on mine.
