Does anyone have (or know of where on the web exists) scale or dimensioned drawings of the xs650 frame and/or engine? My plan is to adapt plans for a Harley frame (which I have) to the xs650 engine. If no drawings exist, I'll measure my existing frame as best I can and post my sketches for general use.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Phred best thing to do is make a jig to hold the engine pattern for the xs650. Once you have that you can basically put it inside of any frame that it will fit and install mounts for the xs. I did this myself and also have a mock up engine for building xs650 frames. But the best thing would be to set that engine you have right inside of the HD frame and go from there.....just my .02

Actually, I don't *have* the frame, I'm going to build it. I was looking for dimensions mostly for planning, actual mounting locations will be determined during mock-up. I want to "scale" the frame so the engine visually fills the space between the downlegs, backbone, seat post, and bottom rails, while making sure there is clearance for the intake and exhaust and maintenance procedures such as valve cover removal. I will probably build the first mock-up out of conduit, and the actual frame out of ERW.

Actually, I was planning to build an engine stand using the case mounts, although I may just cut the bottom off of my old frame and weld feet on it.

All sugestions are greatly appreciated, as I know many are more knowledgable than I am!

Phred, word to the wise. Don't cut the frame. Save it for future referance. Build the jig first. Check out my gallery, I'll post a pic or two of the simple little jig for the mounts. Makes it easier than lifting the engine in and out of the frame.....

I would certainly appreciate the pics!

BTW, I won't cut the frame until I know I have all measurements, and I'll brace it up because I understand these frames are known to spring out of shape when cut. I'll be cutting the neck off whatever I do so I can use it for my new frame-seems there is no defined limits to what a "modified stock" frame is, so as long as the original serial # is intact I should have much less trouble registering the bike, and if I can register it as a '75 Yamaha insurance will be much cheaper than on a ground-up custom. (cheap Scottish roots showing....)

Thats the easiest way.......many people do that.....don't go to wild on the braces tho. I have cut many of these frames over the years and havn't had any spring on me.

Hey Tigman, what is that creation lurking in the background of your frame pics?

There are some great drawings in the factory service manual. They don't have dimensions, but they could be scaled up by taking a few reference measurements off the real thing. If you don't have a manual let me know I could email you the pdf.

Damn tigman, that's trick as hell on the downtubes. Do I detect twin carbs sporting out the sides and facing forward?

Attached is a file with XS650 frame dimensions.

Sorry about the size of the file!
The drawings originally came from a German website and I would credit them for it and post the link if I could find it.

Lotsa luck.

If you could add that pdf to the downloads section that would be great. It seams as though I can't grab it from where ever you put it.
