Hello and greetings from Germany!

First I must admit that I'm a total newb. The steering head bearings of my '80 SE are worn out and I want to replace the original ones with tapered roller bearings. My question is how to do it since I have never done things like that. As far as I have got that right I'll have to take out the brackets (after removing all the other stuff) and first remove the balls and then the bearing seats from the head pipe (using a screwdriver or a drift punch) and then just fit the new bearings into the upper and lower end of the head pipe. Is that right? I've heard that those roller bearings that are offered e.g. via Ebay are a little higher than the original ones. Does that really matter? I don't think so. I have also been told that the new bearings (even if they're made for XS650) don't fit the head pipe properly resulting in too much clearance. Is it so? In case this is true, what can be done about it? What else do I have to keep in mind?

I've already tried to ask in other forums but the answers I got were not really satisfying (too many opinions that I cannot classify on behalf of my inexperience). I just need simple mounting guidelines for one of those head bearing sets. Links to illustrative websites are also welcome.

Sorry for my bad English. Whoever finds mistakes is allowed to keep them. Wink

Hello!

@jayel: I'm going to buy the set from Twins Inn. It's said to be of good quality.

@Fuzzy: That's exactly what I've been looking for.

Arrow Thank you very much!
