Transmission up shifts fine, and first downshift is good. then you have to manually reposition shift lever to neutral position before the next down shift can be made. Have had clutch side cover off and clutch, cannot find anything wrong. shaft and springs are all fine in appearance, dogs seem to be centered. Is it possable that the shift drum positioning star mechanisem. has to be off to one side more? The book says that it has to be centered between the dogs. Any help would do thanks???

It's the springs on the selector mechanism that you're looking at that reposition the shaft for the next shift. Sounds like one of them may have lost tension even though it looks OK. The book specs centering the mechanism with the tranny in a higher gear. Is that how it's set?

Yea it is centered in high gear, further inspection found that clutch was not exactly good either, have since changed the clutch and have yrt to ride bike.
