Guys, you'll note that my bike currently has turnout muffs... there's a baffle in there but I'm not sure how long it is. The bike is not horribly loud but has a nice cackle. And for whatever reason, it seems to run very well so far with pods, stock jets, mixture screws at 3/4 turn and idle at 1000 rpm or so at op temp.
I was wanting a little more "old school" look at some point for this '73 "solo roadster", and wondered what you thought about Mike Morse's "shorty" muffs. They appear to have a baffle, and I can't imagine there'd be much of a performance change.
What do you all think in terms of look and performance?

Those shorty mufflers are VERY loud. My buddy has a set he got slightly used from a guy because of that - they were too much noise for the first guy. They have a straight through inner core wrapped in 'glass but being so short, it doesn't do much. I think about the best deal going now are Mike's Commando mufflers. They look, sound, and perform good. And the price is reasonable. They were supposedly dyno developed so they flow quite well. You may be able to go up a size on your mains if you get them.

Eew! I don't want it that loud! Glad you told me that!
The Commandos are nice looking... you have those, right?

Yes, I have them and really like them. Get the ones that are properly sized at 1 1/2" inlet I.D. to fit directly on your headpipes. Don't get the universal sized ones that come with reducers. I've never been able to get mufflers with those inserts to seal up real good. With the Commados, you have a choice of 2 sound levels. The baffle plate at the rear has a tapped hole in it's center and an Allen bolt "plug" is provided. This "plug" doesn't diminish the sound a whole lot but does take the rough raspy edge off it. I ran mine for the first few days without the plug, then installed it and I like them better that way. I need to get some better pics but here's a couple I do have .....

Boy, they're sharp looking! I really might consider those! Once I get this oil drool corrected, I can turn my attention to that. Thanks for the pics and all the help thus far! My wife might think you're a bad influence but I'm sure glad you're about!

I have to give you guys a real accout of how good Mikes xs is. I bought a set of commando pipes from him. received 1 with a 1/8 inch deep dent and 3/4 inch deep scratch on the cone tip. I was not going to say anything but friends convinced me to email and just let them know how I received it. I email and within 2 emails and 5 days time I had a new one at my door. Mikes customer service is A #1. so MIke if you read this thank you again so much
