Hi all! Glad to find this site! I've got a '75 that's running rich, misfiring at all speeds, fouling the plugs with carbon. I've checked the points, went through the carbs, leaned out the mix, changed plugwires, boots, and condensers. Since I've found this site, I've purchased a multi-meter and found that with the ignition ON engine not running, the voltage from the R/W wire at either coil to the frame is getting about 9 1/2v +/-. I'm no electrician, but after reviewing the wiring diag, it would seem that it should be close to the same, if not the same as checking between the positive terminal and the frame. So now I'm thinking a bad ignition switch and/or short. Anyone have any advice or am I on the right track here? Thanx in advance!

One other quick question. I have Clymer repair manual and it gives 2 different plug types for the same bike Rolling Eyes . It lists NGK B8ES in the front of the book, and BP7ES in the charts in the back. At the dealership, they list the 8ES, but with the probs I'm having I ended up trying both. I went to NGK site and found a B7ES is one step hotter, so I tried them and they fouled the same. Then I tried the BP7ES and it will at least idle, but they still are fouling a bit. I now am figuring that since it appears to be an electrical issue, B8ES is the proper plug. If someone could post any accurate info on this it would be much appriciated. Thanks again!

The voltage would read less on the negative, point side, of your coil to ground than your battery voltage due to the load of the coil. It should be the same on the feed, positive side.

I just got done working a ghost outa my electrical on my 75 xs650b. The first thing you need to do is make sure that when you are testing, your points are both open. Now you are going to read about a one volt drop from the positice contact on the coil and the frame. This is from the pull of the alternator. You should definately be getting more than 9.5 volts...
