How long should they smoke for? I heard that I should expect smoke the first time I heat them up but I don't really know how much and since it's been awhile since I started the bike I want to know in case it's not the headers and is something else (that I should be concerned about, in other words).

Great forum here, thanks for any help.

Did you have any smoke BEFORE you changed the headers?

If not -- did you change anything OTHER THAN the headers?

If not -- then it has almost has to be the headers burning in..

Brand new bikes out of the crate will smoke fairly heavy for 5 minutes and up to half hour. I would let her idle with a fan blowing through the cylinders to keep her cool till the smoking stops, or if you don't mind ride it for awhile, she'll clear up. But if you don't get her good and hot it will keep coming back till its all burned off.

Bitchin'... That's pretty much what I was thinking. They're not new headers, I just wrapped them with exhaust wrap. I think it's actually the moisture (you run the tape through a little water to make it pliable before putting it on) being burned off but, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure if that's true.
I'll be putting pictures of my bike up here soon, maybe I'll catch a few of it smoking. Thanks guys.

Croupier, they might smoke for the first few runs up to temp... not a big deal. No need to be alarmed... mine did too.

Quick question - what is the point of wrapping headers?

Ha, ha. No, they were black to begin with. I really just like the look but, I suppose technically, it keeps less heat from escaping, making the headers more insulated, keeping the temperature elevated within the system, causing the exhaust to move faster through the pipes and thus, increasing performance. But, you know... mostly the look.
It would serve more of a purpose in a big block, hot rod or something of that ilk but the basic idea is similar on a motorcycle.

Higher exhaust temperature does improve exhaust scavenging. But they also keep the surface area at a temperature where little kiddies don't burn there little hands when they touch a hot exhaust. And yes they look real trick.
