| how important is it? I want to run stright pipes off my 81 xs for the sight and sound, but I don't want to blow the motor up. Will not having a baffel on the pipes hurt the motor or is there a small canister that I can put on that won't look all big and still give me the loud crack I want.

Making an already lean bike leaner doesn't sound like a good idea to me......

Check out the following thread on a baffle alternative. Made a world of difference on my XS with a better sound but still keeping back pressure for bottom end power.

John's right -- you'll definitely have to rejet. Do that and you won't have to worry about blowing anything up. Might as well get a set of John's needles while you're at it.
You might want to read the exhaust section in "Minton's Mods," the famous article written back in the day on how to improve XS performance:

According to Minton's tests, he arrived at a set of headers that were 1.5" diameter x 32" long as being the best for overall performance.
Just this past Thursday night at a local bike nite meet-n-greet, I ran into a fellow who rides an '81 that he's converted to a hardtail bobber. He's running straight pipes on his. I didn't get out a tape measure, but they looked real close to 32". Had a good straight-pipe sound, and his bike went like stink! There's another guy local to me who's a member at this board (sorry, don't remember his ID offhand) who also rides an '81 in a hardtail frame. He's running headers about the same length and has a set of shorty oval-shaped mufflers stuck on the pipes. They look like Mike's 07-0047's. They don't seem to do any "silencing" at all, but they do give the bike more of that old school look.
