over standard exhaust system

Supposedly better scavenging? Tell you what, though, when I bought my XS, it had a set of Mac 2-into-1s on it. Been too cheap to replace them with something else. I find the Mac's exhaust note annoying. A good set of 2-into-2s sounds much better.

Best,

Michael

Yeah, there's some interest, but I dunno if you'd want it or not.

The header pipes are pretty blue, and the muffler has never really fit right. Dunno why not. Come to think of it, I have a set on another bike I could probably take off. The muffler fits better on it. Haven't looked at it lately though. Condition is probably roughly the same.

Best,

Michael

Wally, one of the advantages of 2-1 systems is that you won't be tempted to corner as hard in right-handers; the left-cylinder header will ground between the lower bend and the collector. Haven't seen one yet with decent clearance.

Hey grizld1,

On the above bike, I've never ground the left hand pipe when leaning into a right hander. Usually the foot peg rubs before this happens.

Best,

Michael

Cooltouch....bring your XS down to the Smokey Mountains of WNC,I'll show you how easily it is to peal back the metal of the left header, might even be able to score on the right if I lean it over hard enough Laughing ...........Jack

Jack,

If I'm rubbing a peg, I'm leaning far enough over for my tastes.

Michael,

I don't need the muffler, just the header and will paint it black anyway, so those problems are no issue for me. I'm building a RR track bike and want to run this type header with a shell megaphone. I'll probably do some cut/weld or bending to tuck in better for ground clearance. I'm also changing the rear shock mounts to raise the rear for handing, but it also improves ground clearance. Let me know what you think, I live in the Woodlands.

Thanks Michael

I went on a run today with two into one pipes
Seem to have more torque?
Wants to get up & go
also more engine vibration than I had with the original pipes?

Cooltouch............it's not the leaning over that gets the pipes,it's the degree of the radius turn and road service camber, entry speed, riding style and ground clearance provided under suspension loading................Jack

Im looking for a 2 / 1 myself, black header and use my muffler. getting hard to find. I hear there is only 1 company left that makes these and there out of production now, when they will be available who nows. I see a few on ebay, not sure I want to risk that, the fit on some of these can be bad, I have a 75 XS 650, most I see are for other years. Phil

There was never a factory 2-1 to my knowledge. If it was factory, I'm sure the header flanges would be finned. I also don't think it would have that sliding track mount on the muffler part, a definite sign of aftermarket.

If you don't like the exhaust tone of the mechanical baffle, MAC makes a "competition" baffle which is a straight-through glasspack design. I use them in my 2-2 system; nice sound, very mellow, not too loud. My only gripe is that they use a louvered core rather than smooth.
