Hey My name is tom and i have recently picked up a 77 (i think) 650 special. I was planning to salvage the motor and other parts and build a Bobber around it. The only problem is, it is a shaft drive. I have researched and researched and havent found any Shaft to Chain Drive conversion kits for the 650. Does anyone else have any ideas.

Thnx Lots,
Tom Evil or Very Mad

Hey Tommy,

You don't have an XS650 if it has shaft drive -- unless somebody actually built a one-off conversion from chain drive to shaft drive. How many cylinders does it have? Got any pics?

Best,

Michael

It isnt an xs, it is a special. it is a factory shaft too. i think it is a two cylinder. sorry for the lack of info. i found it behind my friends house. (FYE) i am 16 and this is my first project bike. I am probably the biggest noobie to 650's youll find, so if you have any good advice on putting the 650 into a new frame or anything like that pls let me know.
thnx

Hi Tom. Maybe you have an XJ? Completely different animal than the XS.
It might be easier too sell the XJ and look for an XS than do a conversion.

Sure, knock yerself out. But if it's an XJ, you'll probably want to join that XJ forum, too. Good luck on your project.

Best,

Michael

On the topic of the XJ, I got to wondering -- what sort of interchangeability exists between the XJ and the XS650? Has anyone here played around with attaching XJ components to the XS? Swingarm? Wheels? Front forks? Brakes?

Best,

Michael

no to the rear wheel and swingarm, one side of the swingarm is the drive shaft and the wheel has part of the rear pumpkin front fork maybe but it would be like switching anything from one model to another a lot of one off parts and fabbing your own stuff, waste of time in my opinion for very little gain
