I looked quickly through my manual and didn't see anything on a procedure for changing the shift shaft seal, maybe I looked too quick! Anyone changed it? If so what's the procedure and how tuff is it?

Pretty involved. You have to remove the entire clutch assy.,and then it can slide out the right side of the motor.

That's alright I'm changing out clutch plates, springs Etc. I could do it then right?

Yes, you don't have to totally remove the shift shaft, just pull it back far enough so it clears the seal. Then the seal is easy to replace. Clean the shaft really well before you pull it back through the seal. It's not so much the old seal you're worried about but the new one you'll be pushing the shaft back through.
