Hi all. Got a problem and hope someone can help me. My charging system on my 1980 XS650SG went out on me. I have replaced the regulator/rectifier but still didn't fix it. I think it is the stator, the brushes are within the limits. Is there a way to repair the stator without buying a new one or sending the one I have to be rewound? I don't really want to spend the $200+ if I don't have to. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Robert

Have you checked impedence on your rotor? That tends to be a weak component on the '80-and-later machines for some reason and it fails a lot more often than the stator does. You should have 5 to 7 ohms between the slip rings and infinite between each ring and the core. Check it with the brushes out ('scuse me if you've been there and done that!) I have rotors and stators for the CD system bikes, but we need to know what you need first. Let me know what you find and I'll meter out what I have and make sure I've got a good one. If you still have the carbs you posted awhile back, we can talk about a swap.

The key to locating your charging problem is determining if your rotor is creating a magnetic field or not.
You can do a quick simple check by turning the key on and placing a metal object against the crank shaft nut that holds the rotor on. If the rotor is working there will be a strong magnetic field that holds the metal object to the nut.
If there is no magnetism or very week the best thing to do is measure the rotor current with an amp meter. Should be arounf 2 amps. To do this disconnect the brown brush wire. Connect the amp meter in series with the brown wire and the brush screw. Turn on the key, you should see right at 2 amps. If way more amps, shorted rotor. If no current ,... take a jumper and connect it to the green wire and then to a good frame ground connection. (this turns the rotor on continiously for this test) If current is now around 2 amps the voltage regulator is bad or bad connections. If still no current look at the slip rings for glazing which prevents good brush contact.
IF... the rotor current is at 2 amps time to look at the voltage coming out of the stator on the white wires. With the motor running you should see around 20 volts AC.... THATs AC VOLTS, not DC ... at around 2400 rpm.
If present check the DC volts on the red wire coming from the SVR. Should be 14.5 @ 2400 rpm

Any hints on cleaning slip rings? Is contact cleaner OK or should a fine abrasive paper be used?
