I swapped a '72 engine into my '81 Special II, but the '81 carbs have a bracket that prevents installing the cam chain tensioner cover. The newer design is smaller and needs less clearance. Is it the same inside, enough that I can just swap them? Thanks!

That's right--the old style cover shrouds the locknut, and the newer style seats against it. Can't recall offhand, but I think the adjustor is the same diameter and thread. Give it a try--you can't hurt anything if you don't force it.
