hey just a quick question, would full advance not let the motor start? i think my advance weight springs are worn out because it will stay in the advance position and it is easy to sling them out.
they precious owner retrofitted points ignition on my 81 and it just started giving me trouble.

It would make starting very hard. New springs are available from Mike's XS. I just know somebody's going to mention the old home remedy of cutting off a coil and reforming the hook. You can try that, but too much tension can affect response. Be sure the advance rod is clean and free, and has good bushings.

well do you think that maybe it is the source of the backfireing through the carbs? it kinda makes sense. ill try to clamp them in, maybe tape them so they wont advance and see if it will start and idle.

I doubt it. That sort of detonation is usually caused by retarded ignition. If I were you, I'd do a static check on the ignition setting in both advanced and retarded modes. There's another thread dealing with advance governor issues.
