I got the xs running well enough. Now I am seeing a drop in voltage at the battery at idle and well up to 2500. Not having a tach I am not sure exact voltage.
Its showing 12v with the motor off. Mind you no lights, or anything using electricity on it yet, no dash, tail or turn signals either. Then starting the bike shows like 11.75 @ idle. Revving it makes the voltage go haywire, like 5V then in a instant 12, then back to 8 then 15, then 2 then 12 then ...

So what's you guys think ?

Thanks in advance.
Cool.
Srinath.

there are posts in the vault about how to check the charging system out, sounds like your regulator may be going out on you

I would throw in a whole new charging system if your planning on doing a restoration

What meter are you using? I had a digital meter that would read like that. Tried a $7.99 Harbor Frieght one and everything was fine.
Replaced the leads on the first one and it checks the bike fine now.
I would try a different meter before I started replacing parts.

Its a non auto ranging cheapo meter, not sure how it compared to a harbor freight one. It is digital though.
Some parts of this charging system, like the brushes are new. The PO was having charging as well as misfiring problems. I found the grey wire from the spark sensor frayed in 2 places and intermittently shorting to ground.
ust have drove him nuts.

I am not restoring it quite. I am making a runner with a semi brat style look. Then its going for sale. In fact I may sell it as is first and not even do the brat ... but it has to run and run well, cos I plan to ride it a few weeks atleast before a spring sale.

Cool.
