Well I have been around the site for a little while now and finally got around to snapping a few pics of my 78 Special. I really do not know what direction I want to go with the bike so that is why it doesn't exactly fall into a specific category. I mainly just bought the bike to have something to wrench on in my spare time.
The other bike is my buddy's 2001 VMAX (which is an absolute blast to ride)!

Whatever you do don't cut it up and make a cheesy bobber with one of those poorly designed weld on hardtails.Be different go for performance first

Perhaps performance is of lower priority to jerseyjew than it is to you. By today's standards,if his goal was to build a "performance" motorcycle,he certainly would not use an XS650 as a platform. I understand that what has been chopped usually can't easily be reversed, but jj may have just saved this bike from being scrapped. Any XS650 that still moves under its own power is a blessing, and speaks to the quality and sound engineering of this bike's design. If by performance you mean function and rideability,I read you loud and clear. However,as the the age old addage states, " to each his own ".

Hi Guys,
Got a quick question--an aside, rather than a real hijack: why the wrapped pipes?
I assumed that one of the functions of the exhaust system was to dissipate heat--wouldn't wrapping nullify that? Or maybe keeping things a bit warmer helps with performance? I dunno---that's why I'm taking up band-width by asking....
Of course, if it is simply a style-thing, I get it. It looks sorta rough, unfinished, kinda "back-alley"ish---right?
Anyway, just wondering. (It's what I do...)

hey wrapped pipes means warmer exhaust gases which means they move faster so its a performance thing you dont see it but most drag cars do it around here but i like the v max too in the pics

I mainly wrapped but the pipes for looks and to make them a little cooler to the touch after riding; however, it does serve some performance benefits. Here is a good link explaining it
www.centuryperformance...g-138.html
The link provided explains how ceramic coating is better than wrap, but I was not about to spend $$ ceramic coating 30 year old headers.
As far as the frame, I do not plan on hard tailing it. Any modifications I decide to make will be somewhat easily reversible. I am mainly looking to have a good running, clean looking motorcycle to buzz around town on.
