Hi Guys,

Well, I just went out to deal with the leak in the rear tire of the '77. No big, a can of Spare Tire until I can get in and get a new tube, right?

Ummm, no.

I jacked her up with a nice hydraulic jack, and plopped down on my work-chair, and grabbed the tire to spin it around to find the air stem, and the tire moved under my hand. Not the hub---the rim and tire.

Yep. Barb learns the hard way again! Run a chair? Check your spokes on the rear wheel! I knew it could be a problem--that's why I traded my aluminum rims for steel ones, and I checked the spokes every 1000 miles for a couple of times, and it all seemed OK, and I sort of blew it off.

Dumb. Just plain dumb.

I had two broken spokes, and every single one was really loose--like over two complete turns of the spoke nuts on every one! So I've got her to the point where if I had to, I could ride her now, but I won't. She will be getting all new spokes, and after I install them, I will have her wheel professionally balanced, just to be sure.

So. Note to self: spokes in steel rims also need checking, at least every 5000 miles...duh! (I went about 6000 miles this time, and that's too long!)

Stupid. Sad

Scary. Embarassed

Won't happen again......
