I did some searches for "chug" and "chugging" and nothing came up that seems similar to the problem I am having with my 79. Chug is the only word I can think of to describe it.
When I ride over 55 mph, specifically around 60-65 mph, the bike starts to jerk and chug, which is pretty scary since I am usually on a fast highway. I pull off to the shoulder and if I slow all the way down the bike dies completely. Sometimes I pull off, but keep going and continue to try to pull the throttle and it will chug, chug, chug and sometimes catch and speed back up.
But after this happens it is almost impossible to keep the bike from dying at a stop light. When it dies it won't start back up immediately, I have to turn the bike off, wait a minute or two, then it will start again. When it happened the other day, it took some serious time and patience to get it started again.
I don't have this problem if I ride around at fairly low speeds, unless I have recently ridden it on the highway.
Anybody have any thoughts on what this could be? One of the other posts mentioned that could happen if the bike is "running rich", but why would it happen at high speeds and not low speeds?
Thanks,
Aaron

check your fuel tank gas cap to make sure it's venting properly sounds like your running out of gas at speed (vapor locking) could be plugged fuel filter too if you have them on the bike, next time it dies like that open the cap if you hear it suck air as you open the cap clean the vent hole in the cap

If the vent on the gas tank cap is plugged, after riding for a time, the tank will start to be a partial vacuum. Fuel will not flow readily to the carbs.
Edit: Duplicate information..................jayel is a faster typer than me!

I've had the chugging issue but not as bad as yours maybe. I blew out the air filters and while in there noticed that the front of the slides had black crap on them. Didn't have any carb cleaner handy, so washed the front of the slides off with water and a rag. Cured the chugging....strange. Get your air filters blown out and squirt carb cleaner on your slides. If that doesn't fix it, next time it happens switch to prime or reserve and see if there's any effect.
