My bike is a stripped bobber redo (78xs650) and the starter is there but not connected. I have different hand controls so im planning on adding just a start push button and hiding it. Is there anything i need to do specifically or can i just power and ground?

The starter push button needs to have a ground on one side. The other side of the PB goes to the starter relay(solenoid). The other side of the starter relay needs to be supplied with battery voltage. This battery supply should come from a fuse (10 amp) that is downstream of the ignition switch.

In a stock set up, the way RG says is right.
The relay don't really care if the start button is before or after the relay. You can run most any momentary push button switch. Power after the main switch to the button to the relay to ground will work to. Adding a fuse won't be a bad idea.
