I recently bought a 79 XS650 and was wondering if I have the correct speedometer, the speedometer tops out at 80mph. The PO doesn't know if it original. Is this right or do I have a speedo from a XS400? I thought the top speed for a 650 was a little over 100mph. If it is wrong...what year range would work if I want to swap? BTW, it's a XS650SF standard

Thanks

My '81 speedo tops out at 80 as well. I think if you look at cars of the era their speedos do that as well. Also the 55 will be red on cars as well. It was the national speed limit. 80 max might have been mandated by the govt or something.

I've seen replacement speedometers on ebay that read 120mph...does anyone know what the top speed is or if I have the right speedo?

The 120 mph speedo is the one for the 79, think the 80mph was introduced in 1980

Hang on to it mate, there's money in rarities!
At least you can tell your mates that you wound it off the clock!

It's a special standard?
XS 650 F is a standard, XS 650 SF is a special!

C-LosSD, Those gauges in your photo are from a special. 80 and later. The standard model gauges have the key in the cluster and the top of the tripple tree is different for each set of gauges, Standard/special

I based the 79 off my engine serial number 2F0-20XXX so I'm not exactly sure what I have, it's a little of both. I do have the BS38 CV carbs. The PO did say numerous parts were replaced before he had it, so it maybe a mix match. Will a 79 standard (120mph) speedo give me false readings if I were to swap it with what I have?

Thanks

2FO-20xxxx is a 1981SG. Those gauges are for that bike. Any year gauges will work on any bike

Info for ID,ing the frame and motors is in the Vault under "ID Charts"

I see 2F0-200*** as a 80 SG but motor may have been switched into a different frame do frame and motor number match?

y serials don't match, I have a 2F0-15XXXX frame which would be 79, with the curved foot pegs. As long as a early speedo would work, I guess I should ok....thanks guys
