I'm new to motorcycles, wanted a Harley Sportster, but being a 24yr old student a 650 is more in my price range and I've heard these engines run forever, so thats a plus. So anyways, I just picked up a 1980 Yamaha XS650 for $400 off of Craig's List. The bike is in good condition and it runs, but I'm going to rebuild the engine anyways. I plan of putting a drop seat hardtail from Elswick Cycles in Phelan Ca. and a DNA springer front end. I'm also using a G&L Choppers battery/oil can to hide all the wiring and electronics.

I'm a little low on funds right now, but I can't wait to start building.

Welcome.....hy thee to the vault and read the newbies sticky. Get a good manual, either Yamaha service manual and/or Haynes. Learn what you've got and how it works before you start chopping then get it on the road and fully operational while learning more and then.....you'll not only know what it is you really want to do and a bit of how to do it and how it will work. Best, Blue

Thanks for the warm welcome guys... I actually just ordered a manual off ebay should be here in a few ways. Ya, as soon as I get it, I'm going through the oil, fuel lines, plugs, etc. Can't wait to get started though...
