as i am riding the bike, whenever i shift, stop, anytime i grab the clutch the bike wont idle. it just runs at about 3000-4000rpm. when i get to a stop, if i let the clutch out a lil while in gear, while holding he brake, just putting some load on the motor. then it will idle fine
wtf is going on?
i am going to run some gumout through it, but any suggestons as to what it might be?
thanks
hoagy

is the throttle stuck more open than it should be? what happens if you turn down the idle speed screw?

after I changed my bars my bike did the same thing until I adjusted the throttle cable properly took me a minute to figure ot why it would rev so high otherwise the idle screw is a good place to start. Was the bike running fine and then this started or did you just get the bike going?

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me as well. Let it idle and shoot some WD40 around the intake manifold area. If it changes the idle- you have a leak. Mine did that when I first got it. Turned out the old vacuum port on the intake manifold wasn't properly sealed.
It isn't really "idling" when you are letting the clutch hold it down at the light. It is a lower RPM because you are applying a load to it. It should drop right back down to idle if it isn't running lean. Vacuum leak will cause a lean condition.
For what its worth. MC

Looks like it's my turn now. Started her up for a dust off ride and she wants to idle at 3500 to 4000. Out of the blue, ran fine for 2k+ miles after the top end rebuild.
Will have to check for an intake leak as all the previous settings are the same, no change.

Yeah, cable choke.
I was doing some last-second-before-the-light-fades maneuvering in the pole barn the last time I was on her, trying to make some space for an unexpected load of hay. Musta set the choke then somehow.

NJ......My 8-1 is running so good I can stay off of it.......... can't imagine it any other way now...... find myself speeding on the express now instead of gritting my teeth at 65-70.......... looked down today and saw 74mph @ 4k rpm and a cop behind me..........18/29

Carefull there xsjohn, you've creatad a sleeper.
Yeah, 8-1 and the changed gearing sure makes a nice cruise. One of these days I'll get mine out on the interstate, till then 60+ @ 3500 suits me fine.

and a pooch on acceleration, geared for top end and the speed limit hasn't changed so why not use what the motor is capable of? 17/31 65mph@4000 just before the slides lift and you get into the carbs, like kicking in the second half of a four barrel if you twist it's tail

Why does everything always have to relate to 5th gear...........my 4th is the same as your 5th....I can drive around in 4th if I want to buzz the motor out.......I can always use the lower gears to scat..........then have a simi mellow 5th to cruise the express..........only makes since to me.......unless all the revs and vibes really is pleasing......oh well.... ?
